Shamiya Greenhouse: Kuwait’s Green Escape
Hidden in the heart of Kuwait City lies a tropical paradise you won’t believe exists—Shamiya Greenhouse, a volunteer-driven nature reserve transforming desert land into a lush oasis. Best part? It’s completely FREE and open every Saturday.

A Paradise in the Desert
Since 2017, three passionate Kuwaiti women—Noha Al-Kharafi, Adiba Al-Fahad, and Mazna Al-Mutairi—have been planting seeds of environmental change at Shamiya Youth Center. What started as an empty plot is now home to thousands of tropical plants, orchids, spice plants, flowers, and trees thriving under Kuwait’s sun.
“If we don’t change our mindsets and understand the importance of every tree, the nation will never move forward,” says Adiba Al-Fahad, capturing the mission behind this community project.

What Makes Shamiya Greenhouse Special?
Unlike commercial attractions, Shamiya Greenhouse runs entirely on volunteer passion and community support. The Public Authority for Youth provides land and water, but the founders and 40+ volunteers transformed the space into something magical.
This isn’t just a garden—it’s an environmental education hub teaching Kuwaitis about:
✅ Sustainable agriculture and hydroponics
✅ Climate change solutions through urban greening
✅ Zero-waste living inspired by our ancestors
✅ Recycling organic materials into compost
✅ Water conservation in Kuwait’s arid climate

Free Saturday Workshops
Every Saturday from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM, the greenhouse opens its gates for FREE workshops led by the founders themselves. Activities include:
🌱 Planting sessions – Get your hands dirty planting seeds
🎨 Pottery coloring – Kids decorate plant pots
🌿 Hydroponics demos – Learn soil-free farming
♻️ Recycling workshops – Turn waste into resources
🌳 Tree care education – Understanding plant benefits
🧒 Children’s programs – Interactive nature learning
Schools, embassies (like Canada and Switzerland), and UN-Habitat regularly bring groups for educational visits.

Why You Should Visit
In a country where green spaces are precious, Shamiya Greenhouse offers a rare chance to connect with nature without leaving the city. Ambassador Aliya Mawani of Canada perfectly captured it: “Kids are like sponges. They understand the environment is in trouble and want to help without being scared—it’s about finding that balance”.
The reserve promotes a philosophy Kuwait once lived by: valuing what we have. Founder Adiba Al-Fahad reminds us, “Our ancestors naturally practiced zero waste because they truly valued their resources. We need to instill this in our children today”.
Described as “a paradise in the middle of the desert” by Entesar Taqi from the Public Authority for Youth, this space proves that environmental change starts with community action.
